Visit Seoul

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Seoul is a fascinating mix of Korean tradition and global modernism. Originally adopted as the capital of all Korea in 1394, the city remains the capital city of South Korea today. It is the largest city in the country, and is the showcase for all that represents the glory of Korea’s past as well as its glowing future.

There are many links to Korea’s history within the surrounding metropolitan area. Remnants of the great wall that once surrounded the city still exist north of the Han River, the site of the original capital. The “Five Grand Palaces”, built by the Joseon Dynasty in the 15th century, remain virtually intact, despite damage incurred during the Japanese occupation. Museums and art galleries are housed in these palaces, including the Seoul Museum of History and the Art Annex.

There are also several temples and shrines that pay tribute to Seoul’s Buddhist tradition, as well as many traditional Korean villages, such as the Korean Folk Village, located within the metropolitan area.

The present and future of Seoul are reflected in the ultra-modern infrastructure that comprises the National Capital Area. The city represents the cutting edge of technological innovation with wireless mobile television and broadband internet service, and Digital Media City – located across the river in the Mapo district – is the world’s first testing city for IT and multimedia innovations.

Seoul is also one of the world’s largest and most diverse marketplaces. The Dongdaemun Market offers the gamut of traditional and modern merchandise.
The downtown shopping and entertainment district of Myeongdong features high-end retail and international brand stores, and also serves as headquarters for some of the Asia’s largest financial institutions. The COEX Mall in Gangnam and the Yongsan Electronics Market are two of the biggest retail outlets in Asia.

Seoul Airport

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

There are two international airports and several smaller domestic airports that serve the greater metropolitan area of Seoul. Kimpo International Airport, built during the Korean War, was annexed by the city of Seoul in 1963. Originally the only international airport in the area, it now serves mainly as a domestic flight hub, except for flights to Tokyo Haneda International Airport and Osaka Kansai International Airport in Japan, as well as Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai.

Kimpo International Airport is 17 km (10 miles) west of Seoul by way of the Olympic Expressway. Limousine bus service is available to and from the City Air Terminal at the World Trade Center. Kimpo also has its own subway station on Line 5 that runs approximately every 10 minutes.

It has three terminals for international and domestic service. Terminal 1 provides service for Cathay Pacific, KLM, Singapore Airlines, JAL, British Airways, ANA, Northwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Terminal 2 provides international service for Asiana, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Qantas, Air France, Swissair, and Air New Zealand. Terminal 3 provides domestic service for Asiana and Korean Air.

Incheon International Airport is the largest airport in South Korea, and is located 70 km (43 miles) west of Seoul on the Yeongjong-Yongyu Island. The Incheon International Airport Expressway (Expressway 130) connects the island to the mainland and Seoul, and also connects with Kimpo International Airport. Incheon International is the hub for Asiana Airlines and Korean Airlines, and provides service for over 70 domestic and international air carriers.

The Incheon International Airport Railroad (AREX) links to Kimpo International, although construction currently underway for service to Seoul is scheduled for completion by 2010. Passengers arriving at the airport can board AREX at the Transportation Center, which is adjacent to the main terminal.
